I've commanded a lot of difficult people. I know how to handle difficult.

I'm less certain I know how to handle this.

At 0615 on day four I approached my office door and stopped. At eye level — my eye level, specifically — was a single red kiss mark. Pressed into the painted metal of the door with precision. Clean edges. Full lip print. No note. No explanation. Nothing else.

"I was here. I chose this. Try to move me."

I have not removed the mark from the door. I should have.

Black tie operation. Two hundred people in the room.

She took the stage. He was at the back, where the light didn't reach. The kind of place a man goes when he doesn't want to be seen watching.

"Across two hundred people, she found his eyes and held them."

Neither of them looked away first.

Third floor. The building wasn't clear. She knew that.

She went in anyway. There was a child in the wreckage.

"She broke formation. Price watched something he couldn't unfeel."

Neither of them put it in the debrief report.

The debrief room. Standard issue table, standard issue chairs, the particular fluorescent silence of a room that has heard too many reports and not enough truth.

She had her compact mirror angled wrong. Not by accident.

"She watched him watching her. He didn't know she could see him."

The question was whether he'd figured out she knew.

4°C. Lake Windermere. 0200 hours and a cigar ember on the dock.

She was already in the water when he found her. Standing. Not swimming. Just standing in the cold like it was something she needed to feel.

"I needed something that wasn't a lie, Captain. The water is the only thing that's quiet."

He stepped forward. Unzipped his tactical jacket. The code was never designed for this.

He is not going to write about what happened at the lake.

He writes about the cross on his desk instead. The gold one she left when she came to retrieve it and then didn't. He's been looking at it for three days.

"He knows exactly what it means that she left it there. He's not writing that down either."

Ruby arrived first. Then Svetlana. Then Lin Mei, who said nothing and saw everything.

The sisters. Task Force 141 had no protocol for this.

"Three women walked onto the base and the temperature in every room changed."

Summer watched from the doorway. Her past had just introduced itself to her present.

She came to retrieve her necklace. That was the reason she gave herself.

It was still on his desk. He hadn't moved it. That was the answer to a question she hadn't asked out loud.

"Twenty years of correct answers making room, finally, for the true one."

He wakes at 0317. Her hair across his shoulder. The room is dark and entirely still.

He has been a soldier for twenty-three years. He knows what it costs to want something you can't secure a perimeter around.

"Twenty-three years of noise. And then this. Quiet."

He doesn't move. He stays exactly where he is and lets himself have it.
